Well, it finally happened. The BIG terrorist attack on our country. We have all been talking about this possibility, if not this exact scenario, for a long time, and we knew, deep down, it was bound to happen. And so it did. It was not the atomic or chemical or bacterial weapon most of us so often considered, but it was mass destruction, nonetheless.

In what was, for some in the US, a gut-tearing, bring-you-to-your-knees, horror-filled act, thousands of friends and loved ones were instantly, inexplicalby taken away. Now, in it's wake, there is a numbness settling in.

But behind and underneath that numbness is a growing, quiet, but resolute rage. It is a rage that is taking it's time to surface, for most of us, but it is a rage ready to explode on the stage... a stage set by some master craftsmen (in the most perverse terms) who must have thought themselves capable of defeating us, or scaring us, or whatever. Although they succeeded in a horrific act, they have failed on all other counts. They have, in the end, only succeeded in cursing themselves.

It was put very nicely by someone interviewed recently, from Lebenon, I think. He was asked about what he thought about the possibility of us stirring up even more foment and hatred by whatever retaliation we might take. He said it is already there, the foment and hatred, at it's full peak: that of suicide actions. He said no matter what we do, it can only go down, it cannot go up any more than it already is. In effect, we do nothing, more will try (the idea has been planted); we retaliate, more might try, but as we remove them from the landscape, there will be fewer to try, and our vigilance and furosity will be in place, so those that want to try will find us harder to reach.

At my basic core or ideals and beliefs, peace is one of the roots, one of the building blocks upon which my soul and actions depend. But justice is also there, as is retribution. In my search for some understanding during this last week, the part of me labelled Peace can see there will be none until the other parts of me, the Justice and Retribution, are carried out and satisfied.

And although we have, as a country and society, been guilty of our share of wrongs and hurts in the past, none were to such a scale or intent or selfishness as to warrant the response, the actions carried upon us by this maddness. So it is time, and justly so, for retribution.

Let the guilty beware.
